On Saturday, December 7, 2013, The Sarasota Choral Society presented its 69th annual production of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah: A Sacred Oratorio at Church of the Palms Presbyterian Church in Sarasota, Florida. Led by Artistic Director Geneviève Beauchamp , the event featured soloists Robyn Rocklein, soprano; Rachel Assi, alto; Mark Lubas, tenor; and Joseph Ryan, bass; with an orchestra consisting of key players from the Sarasota Orchestra, Dr. Jonathan Spivey on the organ, and an 100+ member chorus.
The performance began with a prelude performed by Sarasota Young Voices (SYV) led by Ms. Beauchamp, followed by a short tribute to all military veterans in honor of Pearl Harbor Day. A special treat was added to Messiah by SYV alumnus Esther Dickmann who sang the soprano solo “Come unto Him, all ye that labor” as our guest student soloist. The audience rose to a standing ovation at the end of the performance after the “Hallelujah” chorus. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune gave the performance an excellent review in its December 9th issue.
Many thanks go to the Church of the Palms, the John J. Weiss Memorial Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota, and the groups, businesses, and individuals who helped fund and support this production of magnificent sacred music. All in attendance found the acoustics superb and the music uplifting and moving.
A Word from our Artistic Director:
It is an honor for me to spend this afternoon with you in celebrating the humble birth of a child who brought peace and hope to our world. I sincerely wish that the words you will hear today, put to music so powerfully by Handel, will continue to stay with you in this season of fast paced activities. I cannot give enough thanks to the board of directors of the Sarasota Choral Society, who work tirelessly to make this annual event a successful one. It always brings me such joy to work with the very dedicated SCS singers who return every year, and also to welcome our many new singers. It is so exciting to see our organization grow year after year, and it is my sincere hope that the Sarasota Choral Society will continue to provide this uplifting tradition for many years to come.
May the spirit of Christmas be with you and your family!
